Background

This safety enhancement outlines research and development (R&D) topics needed to provide active turbulence mitigation. The R&D aims to provide active turbulence mitigation through movement of the aircraft control surfaces for generating forces to counteract acceleration forces experienced in aircraft cabins subject to atmospheric turbulence. This mitigation would be accomplished by the coupling of a short-range forward-looking gust sensor into the aircraft control system and the use of a feed-forward concept to minimize the occurrence of negative acceleration forces that are highly correlated with in-flight turbulence injuries.


This safety enhancement is not currently on the CAST Plan, but might be included in the future. In that event, the attached Implementation Plan would be revised prior to inclusion.
