Background

This safety enhancement outlines research and development (R&D) topics needed to provide improved real-time turbulence information to pilots, ground operations personnel, and forecasters for turbulence avoidance decisions and for input to turbulence forecasts. The R&D topics are:

  1. the development and validation of turbulence detection technology and algorithms to estimate root mean square of the aircraft's normal load (RMSg) from sensor inputs; and
  2. the development, flight test, assessment of turbulence detector performance.


This safety enhancement is not currently on the CAST Plan, but might be included in the future. In that event, the attached Implementation Plan would be revised prior to inclusion.
