Flight Deck Procedures - A Guide for Controllers.

It is important for controllers to have a basic knowledge of flight deck procedures and to appreciate what happens on the flight deck as a result of their instructions. It is also necessary for them to be aware of the general capabilities and limitations of aircraft flight dynamics, so that they can control effectively. A failure to understand these principles could lead to increased pilot workload, rushed approaches, and ultimately compromised safety margins.
This training aid was developed by NATS with the support of EasyJet and bmi.

Normal Operations

Modern aircraft are complex systems of systems. Operational procedures have been developed over many years to manage routine as well as emergency situations. Although these procedures are written down in checklists and quick reference handbooks, pilots must be able to perform certain vital actions from memory.

Abnormal and Emergency Operations

There will be times when controllers will have to cope with unusual situations such as weather avoidance or aircraft emergencies. It is important for controllers to have knowledge of the flight deck procedures that will be used by aircrew in such situations.

The following video [19.47 mins] describes the generic procedures followed by aircrew in certain unusual situations.
