Arousal is the state of responsiveness to sensory stimulation. Overall performance of a user in a system can be affected by their level of arousal but it can be especially relevant to sudden onset of the unexpecected. It is generally suggested that a mid-range level of arousal is preferable.

Level of arousal is affected and can therefore be manipulated to some extent by considering the following context:

  • the working environment e.g.the noise level, temperature, comfort).
  • the role of specific rest periods during duty.
  • Motivation.

Understanding and moderating the working environment to support a ‘best fit’ arousal level for task accomplishment can contribute to improved operator performance and reduced safety risks.
