Description

General Aviation (GA) is a term usually used to describe aircraft operation other than commercial air transport and military operation.

GA is usually taken to include the following types of operation:

• Pilot training

• Business aviation

• Recreation including balloon, glider and model aircraft flying

• Agriculture including crop spraying

• Mail and newspaper deliveries

• Transport of dangerously ill people and of urgently needed human organs, medical equipment and medicines

• Monitoring traffic movements from the air

• Civil search/rescue

• Law enforcement including operations against smuggling

• Aerial survey including photography for map making and pipeline and power cable patrols

• Pollution control and fire fighting

• Flying displays

The international body which represents the interests of GA is the International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations (IAOPA). Many organisations representing GA in particular countries are affiliated to IAOPA.
