Description

The Association of European Airlines publishes recommendations for de-icing/anti-icing of aircraft on the ground.

AEA Recommendations for De-Icing/Anti-Icing of Aircraft on the Ground

Edition 24 of this guide was published in August 2009 and includes the following changes;

  • Practical training to include access to an aircraft in order to familiarise trainees with the location of the various surfaces and components and especially ‘no spray’ areas
  • Practical Training to include a demonstration of competence provided under operational conditions as a condition of a trainee receiving final qualification
  • Procedure for under wing de-icing included
  • Clarification that the fuselage shall be clear of slush, as well as ice and snow
  • Clarification of the requirements in regard to the nose radome area and flight deck windows
  • Clarification of the requirements for de-icing of engine inlets and engine probes/sensors
  • Clarification on minimum access requirements for performing the Post Deicing/Anti-icing Check
  • A separate HOT Table for ‘frost only’ conditions is introduced (based upon the findings of an FAA work programme to substantiate existing frost times) and HOT times under frost conditions have been removed from the existing Type I, II, III and IV Tables.
  • Revisions have been made to the HOT for three of the cells in the Type II holdover time table and one of the cells in the Type IV table.

AEA Training Recommendations and background Information for De-Icing/Anti-Icing of Aircraft on the Ground

Edition 6 of this guide was published in August 2009 and includes the following change to the previous edition:

  • Basic and recurrent practical training should be performed and documented periodically
  • Each relevant qualification level that requires a practical assessment should require that such assessment is performed in actual operations involving an aircraft
  • Written exam questions should be periodically reviewed and updated to cover all current standards and regulations
  • Clarification on under wing de-icing is made
  • Amplification on how the practical assessment should be performed and under what conditions as well as what is to be included in the assessment
  • Updated dimensions for Avro RJ70/85/100 and BAE 146 in aircraft type annex
